ARGUS HAMILTON - Thursday, July 26, 2007

HOLLYWOOD--God bless America, and how's everybody? Mad Men airs tonight on AMC about life in an Eisenhower-era advertising agency in New York. It's a celebration of deceit and sexual harassment. It's no accident the kids of that era would grow up to elect twenty-eight years of Bushes and Clintons. Barry Bonds will try to break Henry Aaron's all-time home run record this week in San Francisco despite his slump. As of Tuesday he had just three hits in his last thirty times up. Only Promises treatment center in Malibu has a lower batting average. Lindsay Lohan was arrested for drunk driving in Beverly Hills again on Tuesday and cocaine was found on her. Her ankle monitor worked perfectly. The ones they give you in Los Angeles alert the nearest liquor store the moment you are a quart low. The NBA suffered a referee scandal Monday as the NFL faced dogfighting and baseball dealt with steroids.

Delegation promises Katrina aid

A key congressman reassured beleaguered teachers and school administrators Monday that Congress is working to speed recovery in the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast of Mississippi and Louisiana.

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn noted a House bill that would provide millions of dollars for affordable housing on the coast nearly two years after Hurricane Katrina. He also said the Democrat-led Congress would support removing the Federal Emergency Management Agency from the Department of Homeland Security.

Clyburn, D-S.C., spoke at DeLisle Elementary School after hearing Mississippi coast teachers and public school administrators complain about FEMA.

He is part of a 13-member congressional delegation led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on a two-day tour of areas still struggling to recover from Katrina.

Feds Raising Employer Fines For Illegal Hirings

WASHINGTON -- A crackdown on illegal immigration will have to go forward without help from Congress, the Bush administration said Friday, asserting that an executive-branch-only approach is better than doing nothing.

Two Cabinet secretaries -- Homeland Security's Michael Chertoff and Commerce's Carlos Gutierrez -- said they hoped to have new tools to combat illegal immigration before moving further to cope with the problem. But Congress could not agree on comprehensive legislation to attack the problem.

The officials said they'll rely instead on tools already in their arsenal, some of which are already under way, including a plan to administratively sanction employers who hire illegal immigrants. .

FirstCall emergency program online

A newly established emergency notification system can now notify citizens within the parish of emergency situations, such as approaching tornadoes, toxic spills and explosive conditions. John Stanley, Webster Parish Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness director and Dal Taylor, E-911 director, are presenting FirstCall, an interactive emergency mass notification system, to parish authorities. On Tuesday, Stanley and Taylor met with Minden Mayor Bill Robertson and Minden Police Capt. Julie Harmon to discuss the system and its applications. A similar meeting is planned with Springhill Police Chief Ronnie Coleman and Springhill Mayor Carroll Breaux. FirstCall allows selected officials to authorize designated individuals, such as dispatchers, to initiate emergency notifications. These notifications, either pre-recorded or created by the dispatcher, can then be sent via telephone to persons within a designated area.

3 Volunteer fire departments get Homeland Security grants

Three of Talladega Countys volunteer fire departments have been chosen to receive grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Securitys 2007 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The Sycamore Volunteer Fire Department, the Stemley Volunteer Fire Department and the Marble Valley Volunteer Fire Department are among the 34 Alabama fire departments and emergency rescue units that will collectively receive $2.4 million through the federal program that supports first response services across the country.

Alabamas Homeland Security Department continues aggressively seeking these federal funds on behalf of our states firefighters and emergency responders, Gov. Bob Riley said in a press release. As a former volunteer firefighter, I know how important it is to provide our local fire departments with the equipment they need.
